Mizoram CM inaugurated India’s first Centre for Disability Studies in Mizoram

Aizawl, July 6: Centre for Disability Studies, said to be the first of its kind in India, was inaugurated at Mizoram University by chief minister Lal Thanhawla in the presence of Union Minister of State, Social Justice & Empowerment Krishanpal Gurjar on yesterday.
The inauguration function was also attended by Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment joint secretary Dolly Chakravarty and officials of Mizoram government and the university.
Lal Thanhawla said it was a significant milestone for the Mizoram University in particular and Mizoram as a whole to have the first Centre for Disability Studies’ in the University, and he attributed this to the efforts of the National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities (Divyangjan), Kolkata and Mizoram University’s department of social work. He hoped that the Centre will bring Mizoram to the national limelight in education.
Owing to its hilly topography, Mizoram is unfriendly to disabled persons, especially those confined to wheelchair. “The state government is taking steps to make the state more friendly to the disabled persons,” he said.
Union Minister of State, Social Justice & Empowerment Krishanpal Gurjar, who also delivered speech at the inaugural function, congratulated the Mizoram University and wished all the best for the Disability Studies Centre. He said the centre will offer in depth studies into the problems faced by disabled persons and discover their solution which will make their day to day lives easier.
